Various classes of antibiotics are prescribed to treat bacterial infections. One of the most common concerns when taking antibiotics is whether alcohol can still be consumed during treatment. While not all antibiotics interact with alcohol, some do, and the potential side effects can range from mild to severe.
Can you drink alcohol with antibiotics?
Control groups had higher mortality rates that were thought to be due to higher protein binding in the absence of alcohol. The effects of alcohol on levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, and trovafloxacin were studied in a rat pneumonia model (24). The mean serum Cmax and AUC were higher in the ethanol-fed group for all FQs, with a statistically significant difference in the moxifloxacin group. The ethanol-fed group was found to have decreased protein binding and an increased free fraction of antibiotics.
Is it harmful to drink alcohol while taking antibiotics?
Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis has necessitated the use of second-line agents, which can result in adverse neurological reactions, making concomitant use with alcohol undesirable (99). The biggest concern is that consuming alcohol with medications might increase the risk of unsafe side effects. See the Drugs.com Drug Interactions Checker to review drug combinations which may lead to serious interactions. Alcoholic beverages that contain large amounts of https://sober-home.org/drugs-brains-and-behavior-the-science-of-addiction/ tyramine may precipitate a hypertensive crisis (a sudden and severe increase in blood pressure) in patients treated with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Stomach problems, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain can be common with antibiotics, too. Although an occasional drink is safe with sulfonamides, healthcare professionals should exercise caution when prescribing trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole to people who drink alcohol regularly.
- All randomized controlled trials and results from smaller, nonrandomized, open-label studies were included, provided that the studies had adequate methodology as judged by the authors.
- To our knowledge, there are no data available on the PK/PD or efficacy of ethionamide.
- Note that this list is not all-inclusive and includes only common medications that may interact with levofloxacin.
- Taking antibiotics such as metronidazole and tinidazole while consuming alcohol can cause several unwanted and potentially dangerous side effects, such as liver damage and seizures.
There is no clinical evidence about Levaquin interacting with eating or drinking dairy products. However, calcium supplements or calcium-fortified foods can both bind to Levaquin, making it less effective. Though there is not much clinical information available, there is some anecdotal evidence that suggests that Levaquin and alcohol should not be taken together. One of the potential issues with taking Levaquin and alcohol is that some of the side effects of alcohol may increase. You may feel more lightheaded, dizzy or have worsened impaired judgement. Despite these limitations, the findings of this review bring into question many of the conventionally accepted alcohol-antimicrobial interactions.
Alcohol did not affect the efficacy of ceftriaxone in a pneumonia model; survival rates were similar in alcohol-fed and control rats (13). To our knowledge, there are no data available on the efficacy/toxicity or ADR of penicillins. A total of 87 studies are included in this review, after many were excluded due to duplications or not being relevant to the review alcohol use disorder diagnosis and treatment (Fig. 1). Drinking alcohol while taking these antibiotics may make them less effective. Use caution if driving, operating machinery, or engaging in potentially hazardous activities as your motor coordination and judgement may be affected. Combination with alcohol may increase risk for additive sedation, drowsiness, dizziness, confusion and trouble concentrating.
Weigh the potential benefits against the potential risks before taking this medication while breastfeeding. Amoxicillin isn’t known to interact very negatively with alcohol, but that’s not the case with other antibiotics. Although research suggests it’s generally safe to take amoxicillin while pregnant, it’s a good idea to let your doctor know if you’re pregnant or nursing to avoid issues. However, although it may technically be safe, it’s not a good idea to drink while taking the medication.
Remember, keep this and all other medicines out of the reach of children, never share your medicines with others, and use levofloxacin only for the indication prescribed. This medicine may increase your risk for aortic aneurysm (bulge gabepentin: uses dosage safety and more in the wall of the largest artery). Check with your doctor right away if you have sudden chest, stomach, or back pain, trouble breathing, cough, or hoarseness. Levofloxacin may cause diarrhea, and in some cases it can be severe.
Amoxicillin and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid may lead to decreased alcohol consumption. Both of these beta-lactams have the ability to upregulate glutamate transporter-1 and phosphorylated-AKT levels, which are responsible for mediating the brain reward center for alcohol intake (12). If your doctor tells you that you shouldn’t drink alcohol, ask how long you should wait before drinking again. You may need to wait at least 72 hours after finishing your course of antibiotics before having any alcohol. Alcohol doesn’t make most antibiotics less effective, but consuming alcohol — especially if you drink too much — might increase your chance of experiencing certain side effects.
However, similar to products containing certain nutrients like calcium, you should avoid consuming excessive amounts of caffeine when taking Levaquin. There are plenty of beverages that you can enjoy while taking antibiotics without worrying about how they might interact with your treatment. Always seek medical attention if you experience symptoms that feel out of the ordinary or are concerning. Griseofulvin is an oral antifungal approved for the treatment of various ringworm infections due to Microsporum, Epidermophyton, and Trichophyton (93). Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) is used for urinary tract infections and pneumocystis infections (74). Per package labeling, alcohol did not affect alcohol dehydrogenase in in vitro studies and may be concurrently consumed with secnidazole (73).
High-tyramine alcohols include home-brewed beer, beer on tap, Korean beer, and vermouth. Most bottled beers are lower in tyramine, but it’s always best to ask a healthcare provider if it’s safe to consume alcohol on these antibiotics. These drugs are often reserved for illnesses like community-acquired pneumonia and severe skin and bacterial infections after other antibiotics have not worked.
While alcohol use should still be avoided with certain antimicrobials, use with select others appears to be acceptable. Use of alcohol with griseofulvin should be avoided due to risk of a disulfiram-like reaction, which may be severe. First-generation sulfonylureas have been reported to cause facial flushing when administered with alcohol, via inhibition of acetaldehyde metabolism (76,–79). As these compounds are chemically related, the occurrence of a disulfiram-like reaction with TMP-SMX seems mechanistically plausible.
